Feedback Cancellation
Feedback (the whistling sound that hearing aids may make) is often a concern with hearing instruments and this is particularly true with children. The risk of feedback occurs due to the rapid growth of their ears. This risk increases with greater hearing losses which require more powerful hearing aids. Feedback is a more than just annoyance, as it prevents us from providing optimal power when the hearing aid's volume must be turned down to avoid it. And children need appropriate power in order to develop their speech, language, and hearing skills.
The Dynamic Feedback Cancellation (DFC) system in many advanced Oticon hearing instruments solves the feedback problem. It is designed to react to any potential feedback situation the child may encounter, such as a leak around the earmold or when the child puts a shirt on over their head, or wears a cap. As the child's ears grow, the earmold loosens, thus increasing the risk of feedback. The DFC system reduces the urgency to replace the earmold during this period. DFC also helps to reduce feedback when the child is being cuddled or hugged.
