Understanding speech in noisy environments can be difficult for any child, but for a child with sensorineural hearing loss it is even more challenging. Due to their hearing loss,  these children have great difficulty distinguishing the important speech sounds  from background noise.The problem is made worse by factors such as distance
from the person speaking and reverberation (subtle echoes in the room). Although today's most advanced hearing aids improve the audibility of the speech signal, they are unable to remove every obstacle to speech understanding.

Thankfully, FM systems help to overcome these obstacles. By transmitting the signal directly to the ear they limit the influence from noise, distance and reverberation.
