Summer Camp 2008

The 11th Summer Camp for audiology graduate students was held in Keystone Colorado from July 26th through July 31st, 2008. This year 81 students arrived from 33 different university programs from around the country. The focus of this year's program was Patient Profiles and Modern Technology. Our guest faculty included Anne Marie Tharpe, Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University who presented on the assessment and management of pediatric hearing loss specifically looking at behavioral assessment and working with children with multiple handicaps. With the increase in audiology private practice, a special lecture series was designed to provide information about the positive and negative attributes of going into your own practice. Our guest speakers included Bill Heob, MS, CCC/A, Scottsdale Hearing Center, Cheryl Runge, MS, CCC/A, Southwest Audiology. Donna Mallory, Au.D., CCC/A, Culpeper Hearing Services and Deborah Falster, Au.D., CCC/A, Fort Wayne Hearing Center. All four of our guest speakers brought their unique story and view of owning a private practice to the students. Oticon staff brought a wide range of knowledge to the lectures and workshops throughout the camp. Some lecture topics included healthcare decision making in the elderly, better understanding of the consumers we serve, review of current implantable systems, patient problem solving and brain vs. machine. A range of workshops were available for the students to attend ranging from subjects in establishing and running a private practice, Genie software overview, pediatric resources, getting signals into hearing aids and lastly the Oticon product portfolio. Some free time was available to the students with activities including hiking up the Loveland Pass and rafting down the Colorado River. A great educational experience was had by staff and students alike!
